He Was Born To Die, The Greatest Gift of All

This Christmas season I have been obviously thinking a lot about the birth of our Savior. When I think about the Gospel in it's entirety I come to the simple conclusion that the whole reason for Jesus, the whole reason for the Bible, and Church and all that jazz is so that the Father can reconcile His children back into relationship with Him. It is all about reconciliation.

The whole reason why Jesus was born was to die. Could you imagine knowing your purpose in life was to die? That just blows my mind. As I read through scripture I am yet again drawn to a deep gratitude and adoration for my King.

The people walking in darkness    have seen a great light;
on those living in the land of deep darkness    a light has dawned.You have enlarged the nation    and increased their joy;
they rejoice before you    as people rejoice at the harvest,as warriors rejoice    when dividing the plunder...

For to us a child is born,    to us a son is given,
    and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called    Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
    Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Of the greatness of his government and peace    there will be no end.
He will reign on David’s throne    and over his kingdom,establishing and upholding it    with justice and righteousness
    from that time on and forever.
The zeal of the Lord Almighty    will accomplish this.
(Isaiah 9:2, 3, 6, 7)

And then we take a look at Isaiah 53

which is the whole reason why Jesus was born...

He grew up before him like a tender shoot,    and like a root out of dry ground.He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him,    nothing in his appearance that we should desire him.

He was despised and rejected by mankind,    a man of suffering, and familiar with pain.
Like one from whom people hide their faces    he was despised, and we held him in low esteem.

Surely he took up our pain
    and bore our suffering,
yet we considered him punished by God,    stricken by him, and afflicted.
But he was pierced for our transgressions,    he was crushed for our iniquities;the punishment that brought us peace was on him,
    and by his wounds we are healed.

We all, like sheep, have gone astray,
    each of us has turned to our own way;
and the Lord has laid on him    the iniquity of us all.He was oppressed and afflicted,    yet he did not open his mouth;
he was led like a lamb to the slaughter,    and as a sheep before its shearers is silent,    so he did not open his mouth.

By oppression and judgment he was taken away.    Yet who of his generation protested?For he was cut off from the land of the living;    for the transgression of my people he was punished.

He was assigned a grave with the wicked,    and with the rich in his death,though he had done no violence,    nor was any deceit in his mouth.Yet it was the Lord’s will to crush him and cause him to suffer,    and though the Lord makes his life an offering for sin,
he will see his offspring and prolong his days,
    and the will of the Lord will prosper in his hand.

After he has suffered,    he will see the light of life and be satisfied;by his knowledge my righteous servant will justify many,    and he will bear their iniquities.
Therefore I will give him a portion among the great,    and he will divide the spoils with the strong,because he poured out his life unto death,    and was numbered with the transgressors.
For he bore the sin of many,    and made intercession for the transgressors.

And then let's look at Romans 3:21-26

But now apart from the law the righteousness of God has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe.There is no difference between Jew and Gentile, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement,[i] through the shedding of his blood—to be received by faith. He did this to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished he did it to demonstrate his righteousness at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus.

I am so thankful that Jesus was born to die. Without Him I would be nothing and with Him I am everything. I am so thankful that I don't have to obtain anything, I simply have to receive. "Gifts" is my number 1 love language. I don't know what it is really but I love to give and receive gifts, I love to put thought into it and plan it and present it. When someone doesn't receive my gift well or at all it really crushes me, because it is how I show love and how I receive love by giving. If I feel so strongly about a gift not being received I can NOT imagine how the Lord feels when people don't receive the precious gift He gave us that is His Son. It gives the Lord so much joy to give His children gifts (Luke 12:32) so let us not be bad receivers, because no matter what He is giving the gift. He already has given the gift 2,000 years ago in a manger - don't let it sit there in vain. He isn't taking the gift back, you either receive it with great joy and give the same gift to others or you just let it sit there.

This year may we receive the greatest gift of all, Jesus Christ. And may our whole lives on this earth be all about giving the gift of Jesus Christ to others.

"Nails, spear, shall pierce Him through,
The Cross be borne, for me, for you:
Hail, hail, the Word made flesh,
The Babe, the Son of Mary!
This, this is Christ the King
Whom shepherds guard and angels sing.
Haste, haste to bring Him laud,
The Babe, the Son of Mary. "
